Good day and welcome to SkidChatter's blog. Our main objective is the discussion of selected literature. We begin with a discussion of the book, "The Trumpet of the Swan", by E.B. White. After this, a simple review or recommendation is greatly appreciated. A brief synopsis would be even better. Enjoy.
Please feel free to solicit book recommendations from your students and post them here. Give the URL to your classes and let the students peruse the book information offerred here.

Thank you.

Chapters 15-21 Discussion

Let's discuss the remaining chapters of the book and the book in its entirety.

1.  What was the point of Louis' going to Philadelphia? Who did he find there right before Christmas?
2. What dilemma did Serena's arrival bring and how was it solved?
3. What did Sam discover about himself, due to bargaining on Louis and Serena's behalf?
4. Did the cob's debt to the music store get paid?
5. How did Louis and Serena spend the rest of their lives?
6. Who do you think experienced the greatest personal growth: Sam, Louis or the Cob?  Tell us why?
7. What was the main point that you got out of the story/what do you think the underlying message was, if any?

  1. I was taken by surprise to find that Serena dropped from the sky right into the lake, in Philadelphia, where Louis had been calling his temporary home. I mean of all the places in the world to fall...Louis' lake.
It was awesome. I was terrified, momentarily, for Serena, but Louis to the rescue.
I love that Louis and Sam's relationship surpasses age, time and space. This is the type of relationship that everyone wishes to have with at least one person in their life.
The fact that Sam's adult life was influenced and guided by an incident of chance through his childhood encounter with an unlikely friend was an amazing twist that I didn't see coming.
I found this story (setting, mood, characters, etc...) to be very endearing.

  2. 1. Louis went to Philadelphia to work for Lucas for five hundred dollars a week for ten weeks. Louis ran into Serena before Christmas.
    2. The head of zoo wanted to keep Serena and clip her wing in order to for her not to fly away.
    3. Sam would like to work at the zoo, because he enjoys animals
    4. Cob went to the music store to pay his debt but shot in the process. The store was repaired and trumpet was paid for.
    5. Louis and Serena lived happy ever after.
    6. Louis was able to read, write, and learn to play a trumpet. He was responsible enough to get a job and was a swan who kept his word.
    7. The main point was if you have, disabilities do not be afraid to try to be able to find other means.

  3. 1. Louis went to Philadelphia to take a job at a nightclub. One night Louis sees Serena, his love from chapter eight. She has been blown to Bird Lake at the zoo by a big storm.
    2. The Head Man in Charge of Birds ordered Serena’s wing clipped so that she could not fly away. Louis prevented the operation by attacking and beating off the zookeepers. He then had a telegram sent to Sam Beaver to come, that it was an emergency. Sam persuades Louis, in exchange for Serena’s freedom, that every now and then the couple will donate a cygnet that needs special care and protection to the zoo.
    3. It was a turning point in Sam’s life. He decided what he wanted to be when he grew up – to work at the zoo.
    4. Yes, the cob’s debt for the trumpet and the damage to the store were all paid for.
    5. Each spring they returned to the pond and had their young. Then each summer he took his family on a long trip across America. They visited Camp Kookooskoos, Boston and Philadelphia. Then they traveled to the swamps in the south. And each winter they returned to Red Rock Lake in Montana
    6. Louis experienced the greatest personal growth. He overcame a lack of ability to speak, the debt of his father for the trumpet and the hurdle of not being able to communicate with Serena, his great love.
    7. As I see it, the main point was about overcoming life’s difficulties and not being overcome by your circumstances.
