This blog began as a book chat, but I've morphed it into a chat about life and life's issues; especially for chronic pain/anxiety/PTSD diagnoses.
Good day and welcome to SkidChatter's blog. Our main objective is the discussion of selected literature. We begin with a discussion of the book, "The Trumpet of the Swan", by E.B. White. After this, a simple review or recommendation is greatly appreciated. A brief synopsis would be even better. Enjoy.

About Me
- connie
- La Vernia, Texas, United States
- I am a single mom, of two pre-teens (1 boy/1 girl). I'm a university education major and substitute teacher. I enjoy an active life with my kids. We roller skate, hike, swim, watch movies, read, and play with our pets. We are collectively working to help save our wildlife and our planet. My kids are my world.
Louis' mom is proven right when she notices that Louis in incapable of "woooing" the female swan, because he can't "trumpet". She had predicted this eventuality when he was a cignet and she realized that he couldn't verbalize. She informs Louis' dad and he decides to follow through with his promise to do whatever is necessary to help his son. He crashes into a music store window and steals a trumpet, for Louis to use to "woo"/court his love. While the cob feels terrible about breaking the law, he feels somewhat justified in that he's trying to compensate for his son's disability. How many times have seen and heard of parents reaching out in any means necessary, in order to help a disabled child? Too many to count. I believe that it's part of the nature of the human animal. While many other species will leave the disabled/ill "child" to die, we/humans grab at every straw to keep the child close and protected.
ReplyDeleteI think that there is a recurring theme of growing up that is seen throughout these chapters. Louis takes off on his own to seek help from Sam to learn to read and write. Louis takes off, again to seek help from Sam, after he receives the trumpet and begins learning to use it. He learns, at camp, how to stand on his own, to be useful in the world and to feel worthy and important. He struggles throughout to learn to overcome his disability and adversity.

-Louis went to visit Sam, because he was the only person that would help him. Sam found him a job to pay for his stole trumpet and help him play trumpet with books.

-In Boston found a job with the Swan Boat.
-The prevailing/ recurring them thought-out the chapter is that Louis is love with Serna, but not able to express his feeling to her because of his voice. Since Cob stole the trumpet Louis is, determine to pay the storeowner at clear his father debt. At the same time, he misses Serena and wants to impress her next time he sees her.
-What does Louis' mother notice that she previously predicted would occur (when he was a cygnet)? That Louis would not be able to get a mate because he had no voice.
ReplyDelete-What does Louis' dad think and do about it? Louis’ dad, the cob, thinks that this is terrible news and decides to get him a trumpet from the music store in the town of Billings, Montana.
-Why did Louis go to see Sam at his ranch home? What happened because of the visit? -What happened at camp Kooskooskoos and how did it effect Louis' demeanor and concept of self? Louis saves the life of a drowning boy and is rewarded with a medal, he also earns money to go toward paying off his debt. These events help to shape Louis’ desire and belief in his musical abilities, strengthening of character and willingness to go outside of his “comfort zone” to achieve his dream.
-Why did he go to Boston and what did he experience there? Louis goes to Boston to take a job with the Swan Boats as a trumpeter. Louis experiences great success and fame in Boston.
-What is the prevailing/recurring theme throughout these chapters? The prevailing theme is Louis’ challenge to overcome his inability to speak, the application of hard work to achieve and the support that Louis receives from those around him.
