Good day and welcome to SkidChatter's blog. Our main objective is the discussion of selected literature. We begin with a discussion of the book, "The Trumpet of the Swan", by E.B. White. After this, a simple review or recommendation is greatly appreciated. A brief synopsis would be even better. Enjoy.
Please feel free to solicit book recommendations from your students and post them here. Give the URL to your classes and let the students peruse the book information offerred here.

Thank you.

Chapters 1-7: Connections

I found that, while reading the descriptions and actions taken by Sam, I was continually saying things to myself, such as; Dillon (my son) takes off and does things like that(disappearing to scout the woods and things), oooh...I remember when Sierra (my daughter) did ??? (anything to help an animal) and sounds like my kids. My kids are very active, outdoorsy, curious and concerned about the wildlife in their environment.

  2. After reading the seven chapter I found myself in the book as far as not being able to be the best in sports, I find other things that I can do to help the team win like analyze the players, keep score, be flexible and when it is my turn to score I make sure I succeed just like Louis.

  3. My heart sank when I was reading about Louis trying everything to overcome his deficiency. He went to school, learned to read and write and carried a chalkboard around his neck only to discover that the other swans couldn't read. His dad crashed through a music store window and stole a trumpet, in order help Louis trumpet/communicate. All of this, and his problem still was over.
I felt the defeat and urgency and heartbreak, just as clearly as watching my son try to overcome his social difficulties. No matter what intense and honest efforts he makes, he gains little to no ground. I lend advice and resources, but in the end he is the only one that can overcome the issues. He has to stand up for himself and that can be a difficult and scary thing for a kid to do.
