Here's the thread.

This blog began as a book chat, but I've morphed it into a chat about life and life's issues; especially for chronic pain/anxiety/PTSD diagnoses.
Good day and welcome to SkidChatter's blog. Our main objective is the discussion of selected literature. We begin with a discussion of the book, "The Trumpet of the Swan", by E.B. White. After this, a simple review or recommendation is greatly appreciated. A brief synopsis would be even better. Enjoy.

We roller skate, hike, swim, watch movies, read, and play with our pets. We are collectively working to help save our wildlife and our planet. My kids are my world.
Chapter 15: “A Night at the Ritz”
ReplyDeleteThe Boatman, fearing for Louis’ safety, takes him to the Ritz Carlton to rent a room for the night. The clerk does not want to let Louis have a room but is persuaded when Louis attracts autograph seekers, shows off his writing skills and plays music on his trumpet. That night before going to bed in the tub filled with water, Louis tears out a newspaper article about himself and mails it to Sam along with a letter that updates Sam on his adventure.
Chapter 16: “Philadelphia”
Louis continues to play for the Swan Boats but realizes that the boats will stop running in winter. Around the end of the season, Louis receives an offer to go to Philadelphia to play in a nightclub for $500 per week to which he agrees. He lands in Bird Lake at the Philadelphia Zoo and meets with Abe “Lucky” Lucas from the nightclub. They discuss the job and Lucas' percentage. Lucas tells him that the zoo normally clips a bird’s wing so that they cannot fly away. Lucas however has worked out a deal with the Man in Charge of Birds that in exchange for not clipping Louis’ wings, he will give a free Sunday concert at the zoo. Louis agrees and begins his work at the nightclub, traveling to and from the club by taxi.
Chapter 17: “Serena”
Later, one week before Christmas, a great storm came up. Incredibly, the high winds blew in a swan from all the way across America! And even more incredible, it was Serena, the love of Louis’ life!! True story! Once Serena recovers, Louis gives her an early morning serenade in which he plays one of his favorites, “Beautiful Dreamer, Wake Unto Me”. Serena is smitten and falls in love as she thrills to the sound of his trumpet!
Chapter 18: “Freedom”
Serena’s arrival meant that her wings would be clipped so that she would stay at the lake. The zookeepers attempt to capture Serena in order to operate but Louis rescues her and drives away the keepers. He then attempts to reason with the Man in Charge of Birds but is unsuccessful. He does get the Man to delay clipping her wings and sends a telegram to Sam urging him to come quickly! Sam arrives and after talking to Louis, he gets him to agree to donate one of his cygnets to the zoo from time to time - a cygnet that needed special care and protection. Louis agrees.
Chapter 19: “A Talk About Money”
Sam reaches a turning point in his life as he realizes that he wants to work at the zoo when he grows up. He goes to talk to the Head Man and after a long discussion about Louis’ past and his purpose for working to pay off his father’s debt, Sam convinces him to let Serena have her freedom. Early the next morning Sam flies back to Montana. Louis and Serena go with him to the airport and also leave Philadelphia. But they take a southern route and visit swamps, see huge mossy oaks trees, alligators and bayous. Louis returns to Montana with wealth, fame and his bride!
Chapter 20: “Billings”
Louis returns to Red Rock Lake, to the joy of his family and Serena’s. Everyone is happy to see them! Louis gives the moneybag to his father and writes a note on the slate for the storeowner in Billings that the cob had stolen the trumpet from. The cob take the slate and money to Billings where he ends up getting shot at by the storeowner who thinks he is going to damage the store again. What follows is a funny exchange between the policeman, the game warden and the storeowner. All want to hold on to the money until the issues are resolved. Judge Ricketts holds an impromptu court hearing on the sidewalk and awards the money to the storeowner. Finally the trumpet is paid for!
Chapter 21: “The Greening Spring”
When spring comes, Louis takes Serena north to the pond where he hatched. He shows her around the pond and tells her of his beginning. Serena finds a place to build a nest were four eggs are laid and hatched. Louis never forgets his journeys and returns every year to Camp Kookooskoos, Boston, Philadelphia, the southern states and Red Rock Lake – always returning to the lonely and peaceful pond in western Canada to nest.
